EDWARD'S STORY
Retiring after 20 years in the Navy and Coast Guard, Edward Goldberg is proud to have served during the Vietnam conflict. He had no idea that 40 years later he would be engaged in another battle to save his limbs.
Goldberg knows the value of effective medical care. His myriad health issues have included a quadruple bypass, stroke, heart valve repair, revascularization procedures and partial amputations on both feet. His struggles led him to podiatry authority and wound care specialist Dr. Alex Reyzelman, DPM, co-owner of Bay Area Foot Care and co-director of the University of California, San Francisco, Limb Preservation Center. Goldberg had been suffering with a large diabetic ulcer on his right foot and a venous ulcer on his left leg. Both had plagued him for years when Dr. Reyzelman introduced Enluxtra, a self-adaptive wound dressing designed for use on any wound at any stage of healing. In both cases, the chronic wounds, which had required ongoing treatment for four years, were dramatically reduced in only months. Treatment of the diabetic ulcer had included multiple procedures and skin grafts, employing numerous wound-care products. “In three months [with Enluxtra], raw tissue that covered most of my foot was reduced to the size of a dime,” Goldberg said. “The wound stays so moist, but Enluxtra just pulls it [excess moisture] away. It has really made a difference in my wound healing.” Since the switch to Enluxtra, the size of Goldberg’s venous ulcer has decreased by two-thirds. Goldberg quipped: “It reminds me of the old Timex commercial, the Enluxtra just keeps on ticking. It keeps on healing.” *Enluxtra is now on the VA Federal Supply Schedule (FSS) and available to help veterans like Mr. Goldberg. Edward Goldberg USN (Ret.) lives in San Francisco. |
