TREATING INFECTED WOUNDS WITH ENLUXTRA

We are often asked if Enluxtra can be used on infected wounds.

Our answer is - YES, absolutely!

Enluxtra is actually the best product to use on wounds that show signs of infection, and for a very simple reason — Enluxtra's absolutely unique ability to absorb and lock in the wound drainage AND semi-solid slough/necrosis components, and to retain them even under compression or body weight.

Reducing bioburden
When bacteria are drawn from the wound into the dressing, they are sequestered inside the dressing and deprived of their ability to  replicate in the wound.
When exudate is absorbed into the dressing material, free water is chemically bound to polymer molecules and is no longer available to the sequestered microorganisms. Without free water supply they cannot replicate, and soon die.
Each freshly applied dressing decreases the bioburden, repairs the periwound area and prevents the introduction of more irritants and microbes that perpetuate bacteria growth. By comparison, most foam primary dressings allow for transfer of the wound drainage back into the wound bed, especially under pressure.

Removing harmful elements
In addition, wound exudate has been shown to be rich in matrix metalloproteinases and other pro-inflammatory chemicals capable of causing damage independently of moisture-associated skin damage. The removal of the wound drainage means removal of  harmful chemicals and enzymes,  and an opportunity for the body to heal the wound naturally.

Points to consider

  • If the wound you are treating appears to be extremely vascular and blood-red, do not be discouraged. This condition is common and often seen especially under compression. Continue the use of Enluxtra to promote the wound's progression through natural healing process.
  • We have successfully treated many infected wounds without the help of topical medications. We do not recommend using topicals with Enluxtra, but if you feel that you absolutely have to use something in addition, use only very small amounts and try to avoid thick viscous topical gels, pastes and ointments.

Enluxtra is a self-sufficient dressing that does not require medications or secondary products. It performs best when its active surface is in full contact with the wound bed. Secondary products may interfere with the interaction of Enluxtra’s active surface and the wound bed, and slow down or stop the healing progress.

Happy healing!
